The goal of the Postgraduate Studies Program to teach theoretical and pedagogical issues that arise and are related to literacy development and literary education at a postgraduate level and develop the relevant research. Consequently, the courses taught in the program cover a wide range of school subjects (Language, Literature, Second Language, Visual Literacy) and the aims pursued are twofold, focusing on: (a) the development of new research that moves away from initial concepts of language and language teaching toward more complex perspectives that center around the notions of literacy as a social practice and of genre, seen as a way of communicating meanings in printed and multimodal environments and (b) foster postgraduate students’ ability to reflect upon their teaching practices through the use of pertinent tools and help improve their own students’ linguistic awareness and literary knowledge.
Postgraduate studies at ” Education Sciences: Literary/Non Literary genres: Aspects of communication in print and multimodal environments” comprise of three semesters of systematic studies culminating in the writing of a master’s thesis in the fourth (4th) semester. The educational process uses distance education methods. In particular, the program adopts a mixed-methods system of education. The percentage of modern distance education amounts to seventy percent (70%) and thirty percent (30%) in face-to-face teaching. The language of teaching and preparation of the dissertation is Greek and studies involve the attendance of the courses of the program and their successful examination. More specifically, in the 1st semester, three (3) courses are taught: “Theory and practice of teaching the novel”, “Digital/Multimodal texts: Critical analysis approaches and teaching practices”, “Multilingualism and literacy in the second language”. All three courses are compulsory and are credited with 10 ECTS each. In the second semester, three (3) courses are taught: “Comprehension and production of narrative and non-narrative texts: Psycholinguistic approaches and teaching practices”, “Literature, cinema and childhood: Theoretical approaches and teaching practices”, “Narratives and arguments in society and the school: Ideology and teaching applications”. All three courses are compulsory and are credited with 10 ECTS each. In the 3rd semester, two (2) courses “Research Methodology”, “Data Analysis” are taught. Both courses are compulsory and are credited with 15 ECTS each. In the 4th semester, a postgraduate dissertation is prepared, which is credited with 30 ECTS.
The total number of admissions to the Postgraduate Program ” Education Sciences: Literary/Non Literary genres: Aspects of communication in print and multimodal environments” is set at a maximum of twenty (20) postgraduate students per year. In the proposed Program postgraduate students, graduates of national and foreign University Departments and graduates of Primary Education and Preschool Teaching Schools are accepted. Each year by June 20th, following a decision of the Department’s Assembly, the Program decides on how many postgraduate student positions will be allocated for the following academic year. Until the end of June, the Program by decision of the Assembly announces these positions through an open procedure, publishing an official announcement inviting interested parties to submit their applications. The announcement states the conditions for admission, the number of students to be admitted, the categories of candidates, the method of admission, the selection criteria, etc., the deadlines for submitting applications as well as the supporting documents required.
Those students who attend and successfully complete the Program will have gain increased specialized knowledge in the fields of literacy and literary education; this, which includes cutting-edge scientific developments, constitutes the basis for original thinking, research and professional practice and for critical investigation of research developments and cutting-edge issues. In addition, they will be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of the principles, theories, methodologies and practices of the fields of literacy and literary education, as well as on how these can be utilized for the study and understanding of genres (literary and non-literary) as used across various fields. At the same time, they will be able to competently apply the theories and methodologies of literacy and literary education in their research, studies and papers in a critical and creative way and they will be able to evaluate, interpret and promote contemporary scientific research and studies. Finally, they will be able to substantiate their positions with specialized information and arguments, to a specialized or non-specialized audience with clarity, competence and precision and continue to autonomously develop their knowledge and skills at a high level, apply the specialized knowledge and competencies acquired and effectively address new, interdisciplinary or unforeseen issues.

The postgraduate program ” Education Sciences: Literary/Non Literary genres: Aspects of communication in print and multimodal environments ” does not charge tuition or fees. Depending on the Program’s income from other resources, it is planned to support the mobility of students.
